Experience a stunning sunset view of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar over the Douro River in Porto—an essential highlight from any insider’s guide to the best things to do in this vibrant Portuguese city.

Porto rewards slow exploration. This riverside city in northern Portugal offers everything from UNESCO-listed architecture and ancient port wine cellars to creative neighbourhoods, Atlantic beaches, and some of the finest azulejo tile work you’ll see anywhere. The things to do in Porto range from iconic landmarks to hidden local spots, and you’ll find both charm and authenticity around every cobbled corner.

I’ve spent time walking Porto’s steep streets, tasting port across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, and discovering the best vantage points for sunset. This guide covers the essential experiences and a few brilliant surprises, so you can make the most of your visit.

1. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on Foot

Large steel arch bridge spans a river in Porto, with colourful buildings and blue sky in the background—a perfect spot featured in any travel guide of things to do in the city.

This double-deck iron bridge is Porto’s most recognisable landmark. Built in the 1880s by a company linked to Gustave Eiffel, it connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River. The upper level carries the metro and pedestrians, while the lower deck handles vehicle traffic. Walk the top deck for sweeping views over the terracotta rooftops, the river, and the port wine lodges below. It’s especially beautiful at sunset. The lower deck brings you closer to the water and the busy Ribeira district on the Porto side.

Both crossings are free and offer different perspectives. Just watch your step, the upper deck can get windy, and the grid floor can be unnerving if you’re not used to heights.

2. Walk around Ribeira District and Riverfront

Ribeira is Porto’s historic heart, a tangle of narrow lanes lined with colourful houses, cafés, and bars. This is the riverfront you see in all the postcards, and it’s just as atmospheric in person.

Start at Ribeira Square (Praça da Ribeira) and follow the waterfront promenade. You’ll pass traditional restaurants, street performers, and plenty of photo opportunities. The cobblestones can be uneven, so comfortable shoes are a must.

This is one of the busiest parts of the city, especially in summer. Visit early in the morning or later in the evening for a quieter experience. The cafés here are touristy, but the setting is hard to beat.

3. Tour the Port Wine Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, is where port wine has been stored and aged since the 17th century. By law, to be called port, the wine must come from grapes grown in the Douro Valley and be aged in Gaia’s cellars.

Dozens of port houses are clustered here, including Sandeman, Graham’s, Taylor’s, and Ferreira. Most offer guided tours and tastings, ranging from quick audioguided visits to in-depth experiences with vintage ports.

Book ahead if you’re visiting a popular cellar during peak season. Tours typically last 45 minutes to an hour and include two or three tastings. Prices vary, so check the official websites for current rates.

Getting There? You can walk across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge or take a water taxi from the Ribeira district. The walk is free and scenic; the water taxi is quicker and offers a different view of the city.

4. Visit São Bento Railway Station for the Azulejo Tiles

São Bento isn’t just a working train station—it’s a masterclass in Portuguese azulejo art. Over 20,000 hand-painted blue-and-white tiles cover the entrance hall, depicting scenes from Portuguese history, including battles, royal ceremonies, and rural life.

People stand in a grand railway station with large arched windows, blue tiled murals, and a clock above a timetable—one of the Best Free Things to do in Porto.

The tiles were installed in the early 20th century and remain in stunning condition. You can visit for free; just walk in through the main entrance. It’s one of the most impressive interiors in the city, and you don’t need a train ticket to see it.

The station can get crowded, especially when trains arrive or depart. Visit mid-morning or mid-afternoon for a quieter look.

5. Visit Livraria Lello (Try to Beat the Crowds)

A crowd queues outside the ornate Livraria Lello bookshop in Porto on a sunny day—one of the most popular attractions in Porto and a must-see for anyone wondering what to do in Porto.

Livraria Lello is often called the most beautiful bookshop in the world, and it’s easy to see why. The neo-Gothic interior, sweeping red staircase, and stained-glass skylight make it a must-see for book lovers and architecture fans alike. There’s an admission fee (around €5–€8, check the official site), which you can deduct from any book purchase.

The shop gets extremely busy, so book a timed entry slot online in advance. Early morning or late afternoon slots tend to be quieter. For me personally it was just to crowded :s so I skipped to go going inside.

6. Climb Clérigos Tower for Panoramic Views

Clérigos Tower is Porto’s tallest landmark, standing at 76 metres. The climb is steep! 240 steps up a narrow spiral staircase but the reward is a 360-degree view over the city, the Douro, and the surrounding hills. The tower is part of the Clérigos Church complex, designed in the 18th century. You’ll need a ticket to climb; check the official website for prices and opening hours.

Time your visit for late afternoon or early evening when the light is softer and the views are at their best. Avoid midday in summer the stone steps get hot, and there’s no air conditioning.

7. Explore the Sé do Porto Cathedral

Sé do Porto is a fortress-church dating back to the 12th century. It’s a national monument and one of the city’s oldest buildings, with Romanesque and Gothic elements.

People walk along a cobbled path near a historic stone building with towers on a sunny day, exploring one of the popular attractions in Porto.

The cathedral is free to enter, but there’s an admission fee (around €3–€5) to access the cloisters, the chapter house, and the rooftop terrace. The terrace offers beautiful views over the old town and the Douro River.

If you’re starting the Camino de Santiago from Porto, you can buy a pilgrim passport here. The cathedral is also a quiet place to rest after walking the steep streets of the Sé neighbourhood.

8. Step Inside the Palácio da Bolsa and the Arab Room

Palácio da Bolsa (the Stock Exchange Palace) is one of Porto’s most opulent buildings. Built in the 19th century, it was the headquarters of the city’s Commercial Association. The highlight is the Arab Room, a dazzling Moorish Revival hall covered in gold leaf and intricate plasterwork. It’s one of the most photographed interiors in Porto.

You can only visit as part of a guided tour. Tours run regularly throughout the day, but book ahead during busy periods. Check the official website for tickets and schedules.

9. Follow the Azulejo Trail: Igreja do Carmo and Capela das Almas

Azulejo tiles are everywhere in Porto, but a few buildings stand out. Igreja do Carmo, near Clérigos Tower, has a stunning blue-and-white tiled facade depicting religious scenes. Right next door, the Igreja dos Carmelitas shares a hidden one-metre-wide house between them, the narrowest house in Porto.

Capela das Almas, just off Rua Santa Catarina, is another gem. Its exterior is covered in over 15,000 tiles illustrating the lives of saints. Both churches are free to visit (or admire from the outside), and they’re easy to include in a walking route through the city centre.

10. Discover Cedofeita and the Rua Miguel Bombarda Art Galleries

Cedofeita is Porto’s creative neighbourhood, known for independent shops, vintage stores, and art galleries. Rua Miguel Bombarda is the centre of the action, with dozens of contemporary art galleries, many of which offer free entry.

The street comes alive on the first Saturday of each month, when galleries stay open late and host openings, talks, and performances. Even outside these events, it’s a great place to browse, shop, and soak up a different side of Porto.

Cedofeita is quieter and more residential than Ribeira or Aliados, making it a good choice if you want to escape the crowds and see where locals hang out.

11. Aliados and Rua Santa Catarina for Shopping

Avenida dos Aliados is Porto’s main boulevard, lined with grand Beaux-Arts buildings and centred on the City Hall. It’s impressive, especially when lit up at night, and often hosts events, markets, and festivals. From Aliados, it’s a short walk to Rua Santa Catarina, Porto’s busiest shopping street. It’s worth a visit for the atmosphere.

Busy street scene with people walking and gathering, flanked by shops and restaurants on a sunny day—a perfect glimpse into what to do in Porto whilst exploring its popular attractions.

This is the heart of the Baixa district, and it’s always busy. It’s a good area for people-watching and getting a feel for daily life in Porto.

12. Head to Foz do Douro for Atlantic Views and Beaches

Foz do Douro is where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a breezy, upscale neighbourhood with a seafront promenade, beach clubs, and seafood restaurants. Walk along the waterfront, watch the waves crash against the fort, and stop at one of the outdoor cafés. If the weather’s good, the beaches are clean and swimmable, though the Atlantic can be chilly even in summer.

Tram line 1 runs from the city centre to Foz, offering a scenic and nostalgic way to get there. Alternatively, is a pleasant walk along the river from Ribeira.

13. Find the Best Viewpoints: Miradouro da Vitória and Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar

Porto is built on hills, so viewpoints (miradouros) are everywhere. Miradouro da Vitória, in the old town, is one of the best. It’s quieter than some of the more famous spots and offers sweeping views over the river and the red rooftops of Ribeira.

Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar is the top choice for sunset photography. The monastery’s round cloister is unique, and the terrace overlooks Porto’s entire historic centre, including the Dom Luís I Bridge. It’s a short walk uphill from the bridge, and the effort is worth it.

14. Take a Six Bridges Cruise on a Traditional Rabelo Boat

The Douro River has been Porto’s lifeblood for centuries. Traditional Rabelo boats once transported port wine barrels from the Douro Valley to the cellars in Gaia; now, they carry tourists on scenic cruises.

Traditional boats with barrels drift along the river, colourful hillside buildings in the background under a blue sky—one of the popular attractions in Porto.

The classic option is the Six Bridges cruise, a 50-minute trip that passes under all six bridges, including Dom Luís I and the modern Arrábida Bridge. You’ll see the city from the water, which gives you a fresh perspective on the architecture and layout.

Cruises depart regularly from the Ribeira district. Tickets are affordable (usually €15–€20), and you can book on the day or in advance. Sunset cruises are popular, so expect crowds during this time in peak season.

15. Eat Francesinha and other Specialities

Porto’s most famous dish is the francesinha, hefty sandwich filled with steak, sausage, and ham, covered in melted cheese and a rich beer-based sauce, and served with chips. It’s indulgent, messy, and absolutely filling! I had to share mine 🤭

Traditional spots include Café Santiago and Lado B, but nearly every tascas in the city has its own version.

Beyond francesinha, try bacalhau balls (salt cod), fresh sardines, and pastries like pastel de nata.

Into Markets? Mercado do Bolhão recently reopened after renovation and is the best place to see local produce, from fresh fish to cured meats and regional cheeses. Timeout Market is another Food market hall, really great for having dinner or lunch.

Bonus option: Take some Day Trips from Porto

Porto is a brilliant base for exploring northern Portugal. The Douro Valley is the most popular day trip vineyard tours, wine tastings, and river cruises are all on offer. You can reach the valley by train, boat, or guided tour.

River winding through terraced hillsides with green vineyards under a clear blue sky—a scene often featured among popular attractions in Porto.

Braga, known for its baroque churches, is under an hour by train. Aveiro, sometimes called the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals and colourful boats, is another easy trip.

Practical Tips for Your Porto Trip

Porto’s historic centre is compact and walkable, but be prepared for steep streets and steps. The metro is clean and efficient, covering the airport, city centre, and beaches. The Andante Card is a rechargeable transport card that works on metros, buses, and trams—buy one at any metro station.

Historic trams (lines 1, 18, and 22) are charming but slow and often crowded. They’re worth a ride for the nostalgia, but don’t rely on them for practical travel.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds. Summer (July and August) is busy and hot, especially in the city centre. Winter is quieter and cooler, but most days are dry and mild.

Porto is generally safe, though pickpockets can be an issue in crowded areas like Ribeira and São Bento. Keep valuables secure and stay aware of your surroundings. Tap water is safe to drink, though some visitors prefer bottled for taste.

Whether you’re here for the port wine, the architecture, the river views, or simply to wander and discover, you’ll find layers of history, creativity, and warmth around every corner. Take your time, wear comfortable shoes, and let Porto reveal itself at its own pace.
