Porto might not be Lisbon, but it knows how to do pasteis de nata right. These golden custard tarts made of crisp pastry, silky filling, and caramelised top, are everywhere. Finding the best pasteis de nata in Porto means exploring traditional pastry shops where recipes have been perfected over decades, and discovering new spots that put their own spin on this Portuguese classic.
I’ve eaten my way through countless tarts across the city, and I’m sharing the places that consistently deliver that perfect balance of crunch and cream. Some are traditional, some modern, but all are delicious.
1. Fábrica da Nata
My rating: 5/5
Fábrica da Nata started right here in Porto and has become something of a local institution. The tarts here are excellent: crisp shells with deeply caramelised tops and a smooth, eggy custard that’s just sweet enough. The pastry shatters when you bite into it, which is exactly what you want.
You’ll find branches across Porto, including one near São Bento station and another in Ribeira. The tarts come warm from the oven throughout the day, so timing isn’t critical. They also do versions if you fancy something different, but I prefer to stick to the classic.
What to order
The original pastel de nata, of course! Add a Port if you’re like in de mood for a tasting. They offer it for a great price.
2. Manteigaria
My rating: 5/5
Manteigaria has a cult following, and for good reason. This chain from Lisbon opened in Porto and immediately won people over with its open kitchen where you can watch tarts being made. The pastry is impossibly thin and crisp, the custard wobbly and just set.
These stores gets busy, especially late afternoon when locals stop by for a mid-afternoon treat. Counter seating only, so grab a spot facing the ovens if you can. Mid-morning or early evening tend to be quieter in most shops. Avoid the post-lunch rush around 3pm when everyone wants their sugar fix. The tarts are baked continuously, so they’re always fresh!
3. Nata Lisboa
My rating: 4/5
Despite the name, Nata Lisboa is firmly rooted in Porto. The tarts are consistently good. Crisp base, creamy filling, proper caramelisation.
Service is fast, prices are fair, and locals queue up throughout the day. Grab your tart in a paper bag and keep exploring Porto.
4. Castro – Atelier de Pastéis de Nata
My rating: 5/5
Castro is probably my favorite spot. This store is so beautiful 🥰 and the quality of Pastéis de Nata is high. Seating is limited, so be prepared to take away during busy periods.
Some people sprinkle cinnamon on top? I love that too. Makes it even more exciting!
5. Confeitaria do Bolhão
My rating: 4/5
This old-school café near Bolhão market has been serving pastries since 1896. It’s the kind of place where regulars read newspapers at marble tables and everything feels unchanged. The pastéis de nata are traditional and delicious: thick custard, golden pastry.
What I love here is the atmosphere as much as the tart itself. It’s proper Porto. Prices are very reasonable. Pair your tart with a galão (milky coffee) and take your time.
Nearby spots: Bolhão market is right there After your tart, wander through the market stalls for fruit, cheese, and local specialities.
Let me know what’s your favorite?
Finding the best pastéis de nata in Porto means trying a few different spots. And let me tell you, that’s a task I’ll sign up for every day. Though I must say, if you’ve had Pastel de Nata for a couple of days, you’ll probably have your fix for the rest of the year.
I’d love to hear which spot is your favorite, let me know on Instagram :).
