Porto is Portugal’s second city, but in personality and appeal, it doesn’t play the underdog to anyone.
This guide covers everything practical: how to arrive, getting around efficiently, where to sleep and eat, what to see, and how to structure your days
, so you can make the most of your visit. The city rewards travellers who don’t mind a bit of leg work ;)

1. Where to Stay in Porto?

Choosing your neighbourhood makes a big difference in Porto. The city is compact, but hills and stairs mean location matters.

📍Ribeira

Best for: First-time visitors who want to be right on the river and don’t mind crowds.

The riverside heart of Porto, Ribeira is atmospheric and central but can be noisy and packed with tourists. Accommodation here ranges from budget hostels to boutique hotels. You’ll be in the thick of it, which is great for short visits but can feel relentless at night.

📍Baixa and Aliados

Best for: Travellers who want a central, well-connected base without the riverside tourist crush.

This central district around Avenida dos Aliados and São Bento station is convenient, with good metro and bus connections, shopping streets, and easy access to major sights. It’s livelier and more business-like than Ribeira, with a mix of hotels, guesthouses, and short-term rentals.

Cityscape with red-tiled rooftops and Porto’s tall historic clock tower under a clear blue sky, perfect for any travel guide or list of things to do in the city.

📍Vila Nova de Gaia

Best for: Wine enthusiasts and travellers seeking a quieter base with killer views.

Across the river from Porto, Gaia offers stunning views back towards the city and easy access to the port wine cellars. It’s quieter than central Porto, with a growing selection of hotels and guesthouses. The walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge to Porto takes about 10 minutes.

Accommodation tip: Porto has steep stairs everywhere. If you have mobility concerns or heavy luggage, confirm lift access with your accommodation before booking.

📍Cedofeita and Rua Miguel Bombarda

Best for: Creative types and repeat visitors who want a local feel.

Cedofeita is Porto’s artsy, bohemian neighbourhood, home to galleries, independent shops, and relaxed cafés. It’s less touristy, more residential, and still within a 15-20 minute walk of the main sights. Accommodation here tends to be guesthouses, Airbnbs, and smaller hotels.

📍Foz do Douro

Best for: Longer stays, families, or anyone who prioritises space and sea air over being in the thick of the action.

If you prefer a seaside vibe with easy beach access, Foz is your spot. It’s quieter and more upscale, with a suburban feel. You’ll need the tram or bus to reach the historic centre (15-20 minutes), but it’s a pleasant trade-off for ocean views and fresh seafood.

2. Things to Do and city Highlights

Porto rewards wandering, but a few landmarks and experiences deserve your time.

People stroll by the Douro River with the Dom Luís I Bridge and colourful Porto buildings in the background—perfect for photos and discovering local gems with insider tips Porto offers.

1. Ribeira District and the Riverside

The Ribeira is Porto’s postcard-perfect riverfront, a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with colourful buildings, outdoor cafés, and river views. It’s touristy, yes, but genuinely atmospheric, especially in the early morning or evening when day trippers thin out.

Walk along the Cais da Ribeira, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot (lower or upper deck, both offer different perspectives), and soak up the scene. The area gets crowded midday, and restaurant touts can be pushy, so keep walking if you’re not ready to sit down.

2. Dom Luís I Bridge

This double-deck iron bridge connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia and is one of the city’s defining sights. The upper deck carries the metro and pedestrians, offering dizzying views over the river and rooftops. The lower deck is wider and calmer. Walk across both levels if you have time. The upper deck at sunset is magic, but it does get busy. If you’re nervous about heights, stick to the lower level.

3. Clérigos Tower

This baroque bell tower is Porto’s most recognisable landmark. Climb the 225 steps (narrow and winding, not suitable for anyone with mobility issues) for 360-degree views over the city. It’s worth the effort, especially late afternoon when the light is warm.

Entry costs around €6 and includes access to the Clérigos Church and museum. Check opening times on the official site, as they vary seasonally.

People stand in a grand railway station with large arched windows, blue tiled murals, and a clock above a timetable—one of the Best Free Things to do in Porto.

4. São Bento Train Station

Even if you’re not catching a train, pop into São Bento to see the entrance hall covered in over 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history. It’s free, takes ten minutes, and the tiles are genuinely beautiful. Go early to avoid tour groups.

A crowd queues outside the ornate Livraria Lello bookshop in Porto on a sunny day—one of the most popular attractions in Porto and a must-see for anyone wondering what to do in Porto.

5. Lello Bookshop

Lello is one of the world’s most beautiful bookshops, with an ornate interior and a famous red staircase. It’s also one of Porto’s most hyped attractions, and crowds can make it feel more like a museum than a bookshop.

Entry costs around €5, redeemable against a book purchase. Go first thing in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak crush. If you love books and architecture, it’s worth it. If you hate crowds, skip it and visit independent bookshops elsewhere in the city.

6. Serralves Museum and Park

Serralves is Porto’s contemporary art museum, set in a striking modernist building surrounded by formal gardens and woodland. The permanent collection and temporary exhibitions focus on modern and contemporary art, and the park itself is a lovely escape from the city buzz.

Plan at least two hours here. Entry costs around €12 for the museum and park, less for park-only tickets. It’s a 20-minute bus or tram ride from the centre. Check the website for current exhibitions and opening times.

7.Port Wine Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, is where port wine is aged and bottled. Dozens of cellars (called ‘lodges’) offer tours and tastings. Big names like Sandeman, Taylor’s, and Graham’s have slick visitor experiences, while smaller producers offer more intimate, hands-on visits.

Most tours last 45-60 minutes, include a tasting of two or three ports, and cost €10-20. Book ahead online, especially in summer. I recommend trying at least one cellar tour, even if you’re not a big wine drinker. The history and process are fascinating, and you’ll leave understanding why port is such a big deal.

8. Mercado do Bolhão

This traditional market in the city centre reopened after years of renovation and remains a lovely spot to browse fresh produce, flowers, and local products. It’s more atmospheric in the morning. Upstairs, you’ll find small eateries serving simple, honest Portuguese food.

3. What & Where to Eat in Porto?

Porto’s food scene is hearty, unpretentious, and seriously tasty. You’ll eat well at every budget level, from tascas (traditional taverns) to Michelin-starred dining rooms.

Local Dishes

Francesinha is Porto’s signature dish: a towering sandwich filled with ham, sausage, and steak, covered in melted cheese and a rich beer-and-tomato sauce, served with chips. It’s not elegant, but it’s delicious and filling. Every local has a favourite spot, so ask around. Read more on my must try food list.

Tripas à moda do Porto (Porto-style tripe) is the city’s historic dish, a slow-cooked stew of tripe, beans, and sausage. It’s an acquired taste, but if you’re adventurous, try it at a traditional restaurant.

Fresh fish and seafood are excellent, especially in Matosinhos. Grilled sardines, octopus, sea bass, and percebes (goose barnacles) are all worth ordering.

A tray filled with many Portuguese custard tarts, said to be the best pastéis de nata in Porto, on display behind glass at a bakery counter.

Pastéis de nata (custard tarts) are everywhere, and while they originated in Lisbon, Porto does them justice. Grab one with your morning coffee. Looking for the best Nata’s?

Where to Eat

Rua Santa Catarina is a busy shopping street with cafés, bakeries, and casual eateries. It’s convenient but touristy in parts. Look for places with locals eating, not just tourists.

Mercado Time Out has amazing food stalls serving dishes at reasonable prices.

Eating tip: Lunch is usually served 12:30-3pm, dinner from 7:30pm onwards. Many traditional restaurants close Sunday evenings and Mondays. Book ahead for popular spots, especially at weekends.

For francesinha, locals recommend Café Santiago or Lado B. For seafood, head to Matosinhos and pick any busy grill restaurant near the fish market. For something upscale, Pedro Lemos and Antiqvvm both hold Michelin stars and offer refined takes on Portuguese ingredients.

Porto’s wine bars are excellent too. Try Prova or Aduela Taberna for Portuguese wines by the glass paired with petiscos (small plates).

Two people clink glasses of red and white wine by a riverside city at sunset, savouring the moment in true Tips Porto style.

4. How to Get Around in Porto

Porto is a walking city first and foremost. Most attractions cluster in the historic centre, and the riverside districts are best explored on foot. That said, the hills are real, and public transport fills the gaps efficiently.

Walking

You’ll do a lot of walking here, often uphill. Porto’s topography is dramatic, with steep climbs rewarded by sweeping views. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. Some streets are cobbled and uneven, so watch your footing, especially after rain. The Ribeira district by the river, the Clérigos Tower area, and Rua Santa Catarina shopping street are all walkable from one another, though expect to pause for breath on the steeper sections.

Metro

Porto’s metro system is modern, clean, and covers the city and suburbs efficiently. Six colour-coded lines serve key areas, including the airport, beaches at Matosinhos, and Vila Nova de Gaia across the river.

From the airport, the Metro Line E (purple line) runs directly into the city centre. The journey to Trindade station takes around 30 minutes and costs about €2 with an Andante card.

To use the metro (and buses and some trains), you’ll need an Andante card. This rechargeable travel card costs €0.60 and can be topped up with single trips or day passes. The city is divided into zones; most visitors stick to Zone 2, which covers the centre and costs around €1.30 per trip. A 24-hour pass for unlimited travel in central zones costs about €7 and can be worth it if you’re hopping around.

Buy and reload your Andante card at metro stations from ticket machines (English available). Validate it at the yellow readers before boarding.

Buses and Trams

STCP buses cover areas the metro doesn’t reach. They’re reliable but less intuitive for short visits. The same Andante card works here. Porto has three heritage tram lines that double as tourist attractions. Tram 1 runs along the river from the Ribeira to the Foz district and the Atlantic coast, offering lovely views. It’s a charming, slightly touristy experience but worth doing once. Tickets cost around €4.

Driving or Taxis

Avoid driving in Porto’s centre unless you enjoy tight streets, aggressive drivers, and expensive parking. If you have a car for exploring the Douro Valley, park it at your hotel and leave it there during your city days.

take Taxis instead. Uber and Bolt both operate in Porto and are often cheaper and more convenient than hailing a cab. Ride apps are handy when you’ve exhausted your daily step count on those hills.

Biking

Porto isn’t the most bike-friendly city due to hills, cobbles, and traffic, but flat riverside paths along the Douro offer pleasant cycling. Bike-sharing schemes exist, and some hotels rent bikes. It’s an option for confident urban cyclists, but not essential.

5. Suggested 3 day Itinerary

Here’s how to structure one to three days in Porto, balancing major sights, food, and downtime. Adjust based on your interests and energy levels.

Experience a stunning sunset view of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar over the Douro River in Porto—an essential highlight from any insider’s guide to the best things to do in this vibrant Portuguese city.

1. Day One: Historic Centre and Riverside

Morning: Start at São Bento station to see the azulejo tiles (15 minutes). Walk towards Cathedral Sé do Porto and then down hill to the river.

Lunch: Grab a meal around Cais da Ribeira or in the Ribeira district

Afternoon: walk the Ribeira district and cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on the lower deck to Vila Nova de Gaia. Visit a port wine cellar for the best tastings. Walk back across the upper deck for sunset views.

Evening: Dinner in the Baixa or Cedofeita area. Explore Porto’s bars and nightlife.

Pacing tip: Porto’s hills and cobbles can be tiring. Build in rest stops, and don’t try to cram too much into one day. The city rewards slower exploration.

2. Day Two: Culture, Markets, and the Coast

Morning: Start at Mercado do Bolhão for a simple, market-fresh products. Pay also a stop at Capela de Santa Catarina. After walk toward Aliados to Clérigos Tower.

Break: Base Porto for a drink, lunch option best on the other side of the university, like Nonna Piazza.

Afternoon: Explore the area, head to Livraria Lello, make sure to book tickets upfront. And go Pasteis de Nata Hunting, the best ones are Manteigaria or Castro Atelier de Pastéis de Nata

Evening: If you’re up for it, catch a live music gig or Fado performance in a small venue.

3. Day Three: Day Trip or City Deep Dive

Option A: Douro Valley day trip. Join a guided Douro tour. Spend the day among vineyards, visit a quinta for lunch and wine tasting, and return to Porto in the evening.

Option B: Stay in Porto. Explore neighbourhoods you missed. Visit the Casa da Música for contemporary architecture, browse independent shops in Cedofeita. Have a long lunch and enjoy Porto at a slower pace.

Day Trips from Porto

Porto makes an excellent base for exploring northern Portugal. The Douro Valley, with its terraced vineyards and wine estates, is a must if you have a day to spare. You can visit independently by train (the Douro line is scenic) or join a guided tour. Expect stunning landscapes and plenty of wine tasting.

A vineyard on a hill with buildings, trees, and a river in the foreground under a blue sky evokes the scenic beauty often found near Tips Porto, blending nature’s tranquillity with charming architecture.

Douro River Cruises

Several operators offer boat trips on the Douro, from short 50-minute loops under the six bridges to longer cruises upriver into the valley. The six-bridge tour is touristy but offers great perspectives on Porto’s skyline and the bridges.

Prices start around €15 for basic cruises. Evening or sunset trips cost more but add atmosphere. Book tickets along the riverfront or online. If you have more time, consider a full-day cruise into the Douro Valley, with stops at quintas (wine estates).

Braga

Braga, Portugal’s religious capital, is 45 minutes by train and worth a half-day for its baroque churches and the Bom Jesus sanctuary. Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal, has a beautifully preserved medieval centre and castle, also under an hour away.

Practical Tips for Porto

Here are some extra bits of advice to smooth out your visit to this city

Portuguese is the official language. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions, but less so in traditional tascas and local shops. Learn a few Portuguese phrases (obrigado/obrigada for thank you, por favor for please) and locals will appreciate the effort.

Portugal uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small purchases, markets, and traditional cafés. ATMs are plentiful.

Porto is generally safe, with low violent crime. Pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas like Ribeira and on public transport. Keep valuables secure and stay alert. The Ribeira area can feel a bit seedy late at night, but it’s more about noise and drunken tourists than danger.

Service charges are usually included in bills. Tipping isn’t obligatory, but rounding up or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated.

Porto’s historic centre is challenging for wheelchair users and anyone with mobility issues. Steep hills, cobbled streets, and stairs are everywhere. The metro and modern areas are accessible, but many older buildings, restaurants, and sights are not. Contact accommodation and attractions in advance to confirm accessibility.
