5x The Best Day Trips From Naples

Perfect places to escape the City

Written by Niké
Aerial view of Naples, Italy, with colorful buildings, domes, and modern skyscrapers—perfect for planning the best day trips from Naples to explore the surrounding beauty.

Naples is an incredible base if you love the idea of mixing city buzz with coastal views and island escapes. Within an hour or two, you can be wandering Roman streets frozen in time, hiking up a volcano, or sipping a spritz above the sea. These five day trips give you very different sides of the region.

1. Follow the Amalfi Coast | Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello

The Amalfi Coast is the postcard version of this part of Italy, with steep cliffs, pastel houses and roads that twist along the edge of the sea. Towns like PositanoAmalfi and Ravello sit on terraces above the water, with lanes full of lemon products, ceramics and tiny cafés. It is busy and not exactly cheap, but if you want a day that feels special and very “this is Italy”, it really delivers 💛

You can spend your time wandering the streets, taking boat trips between towns, stopping for long lunches with a view and dipping your feet in the water on small beaches.

If this is your first time and you only have one day, I would pick two stops rather than trying to race through every town. A simple but lovely combo is Positano in the morning then a boat to Amalfi, with a late afternoon coffee or gelato before heading back.

2. Capri Island | Glamour and Natural Beauty

Capri has a reputation for being posh and pricey, and it is—but it’s also dramatic, beautiful, and surprisingly easy to reach. Ferries leave from Naples (Molo Beverello or Mergellina) and take 40–80 minutes depending on the boat. Once you arrive, take the funicular up to Capri town and explore the lanes, or hop on a bus to Anacapri for a quieter vibe and access to Monte Solaro, the island’s highest point. The views from the chairlift are spectacular.

The famous Blue Grotto is a highlight if conditions allow—you ride a small rowboat into a sea cave lit by electric blue light. It’s weather-dependent, so don’t build your whole trip around it. Even without the grotto, Capri delivers. 🌊

What to Know

  • Ferries run year-round, but services are more frequent in summer.
  • Tickets sell out in peak season, so book ahead if possible.
  • The island is hilly—wear comfortable shoes.
  • Eating and drinking can be expensive; budget accordingly or bring snacks.

3. Pompeii and Herculaneum | Step Back into Ancient Rome

Pompeii is the big name, and for good reason. This ancient Roman city was buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and today it’s one of the most complete archaeological sites you’ll find anywhere. Walking through the streets, you can see temples, bathhouses, shops, and even graffiti scratched into walls two millennia ago.

The site is huge! So give yourself at least half day. Start early to beat the heat and the crowds. The Forum, the amphitheatre, and the Garden of the Fugitives are highlights, but honestly, just wandering the streets is impressive.

Ancient stone street lined with ruins of brick buildings in the archaeological site of Pompeii, one of the best attractions Naples has to offer for history lovers.

Herculaneum is smaller and quieter, but better preserved in some ways. The wooden beams and mosaics are stunning. If you have time, visit both—they’re only a short train ride apart on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples.

Practical Tips

  • Check official opening times and ticket options on the Parco Archeologico di Pompei website.
  • Take the train from Napoli Porta Nolana or Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri (about 40 minutes).
  • Bring sun protection and water there’s little shade. 👒
  • Consider an audio guide or guidebook; the ruins are more meaningful with context.

4. Mount Vesuvius | Go for a Hike

Tourists explore ancient ruins in Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius visible in the background under a blue sky, making it one of the best day trips from Naples.

Mount Vesuvius is that volcano you can see from the city, and honestly, hiking up to the crater rim is a pretty cool adventure! The walk is short but steep and on gravelly ground, with views over the Bay of Naples opening up behind you as you climb. At the top, you can peer into the crater, see wisps of steam on some days and circle part of the rim on a clear path. It is a great way to add something active to your trip.

If you’re visiting Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day, visit Pompeii in the morning and then schedule a later afternoon time for the volcano. The light is softer, temperatures are a bit lower, and watching the bay from up there as the day cools down feels pretty special.

5. Sorrento | Slow things down on a relaxed day trip

Sorrento is often treated as a base for the Amalfi Coast, but it also works nicely as a relaxed day trip from Naples. The town sits on cliffs above the sea, with a compact old centre full of shops, limoncello bottles, leather sandals and hidden courtyards. You get viewpoints over the bay, small marinas below, and plenty of bars and restaurants for long, lazy meals.

It is less intense than central Naples and less hectic than the tightest parts of the Amalfi Coast, so it is a good choice if you want something easy and scenic without a complicated plan 🙂

Across these five day trips, you get a good mix of history, scenery and relaxed days by the sea.
