Naples is chaotic, beautiful, delicious, and utterly unforgettable. This tips Naples guide covers everything you need to know for your visit, from navigating the narrow streets to finding the best pizza in its birthplace. This guide covers transport, neighbourhoods, museums, restaurants, and a practical itinerary to help you make the most of your time here.

I’ll be honest: Naples isn’t for everyone. It’s loud, crowded, and graffiti-covered in places. But if you’re willing to embrace the chaos, you’ll find a city bursting with life, history, incredible food, and some of Italy’s finest art and archaeology.

1. Where to Stay in Naples

Pick the right neighborhood and the city suddenly becomes walk-able and welcoming. Here are the different areas, their vibes, and some recommended hotels or B&B’s.

Centro Storico (Historic Centre)

This is my top pick for first-time visitors. You’re walking distance from major sights, restaurants, and the metro. The streets are atmospheric, and you’ll feel immersed in daily Neapolitan life. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to boutique B&Bs.

Streets can be noisy, especially on weekend nights, so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

Where to stay 🛏️

Chiaia

Chiaia is the upscale shopping district near the waterfront, with elegant streets, cafés, and a more polished feel. It’s quieter than the historic centre but still central.

Where to stay 🛏️

Vomero

Vomero sits on the hill above the city, offering peace, green spaces, and fantastic views. It’s residential and feels less touristy, but you’ll rely on funiculars or buses to reach the sights below. Good for families or anyone wanting a calmer base.

Where to stay 🛏️

Lungomare

If you picture waking up to a postcard view of Vesuvius and Castel dell’Ovo, this is probably where you are staying. The area around Piazza del Plebiscito and along the Lungomare is lined with stately buildings, wide pavements and some of Naples’ most famous hotels.

Where to stay 🛏️

Tip: Book accommodation with air conditioning if you’re visiting in summer. Naples gets hot and humid, and many older buildings don’t have modern cooling.

Napoli Centrale or Spanish Quarters

I would not reccommend staying in the streets directly around Napoli Centrale train station or the Spanish Quarters. Budget travellers often stay near Napoli Centrale for convenience and cheap accommodation. These places can feel a bit rough and not that pleasant to walk around at night.

2. Top 10 best things to see & do

1.The Historic Centre of Naples (Centro Storico)

The Historic Centre is the heart of Naples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Think narrow streets, scooters weaving past, tiny shrines on corners, laundry hanging above you and the smell of espresso and pizza everywhere. Streets like Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli cut right through the old city and are packed with pizzerias, bakeries, churches and small artisan shops. It is the best place to feel what Naples is really like and to people‑watch for hours.

2.Galleria Umberto I

Galleria Umberto I is a stunning 19th‑century shopping arcade with a soaring glass roof, patterned floor and ornate façades. Sunlight pours through the dome, creating a bright, almost theatrical space that feels a bit like a grand indoor piazza. There are cafés, a few shops and plenty of spots to sit and look up at the architecture. Even if you are not shopping, it is worth a short visit just to take it all in.

Interior view of a grand building with a glass-domed ceiling and ornate architectural details.

3. The cloisters of Santa Chiara

Hidden behind busy streets, the cloisters of Santa Chiara are a calm, colourful surprise. The courtyard is lined with hand‑painted, majolica‑tiled columns and benches decorated with bright scenes of countryside life. Arched walkways and frescoed walls surround the garden, and there is a peaceful, almost dreamlike atmosphere that feels miles away from the traffic outside.

4.Piazza del Gesù Nuovo

Piazza del Gesù Nuovo is one of the key squares in the Historic Centre, framed by impressive churches and lively street life. The dark stone façade of Gesù Nuovo church looks almost like a fortress from the outside, but inside you get a richly decorated interior with marble, gold details and frescoes. Nearby you also have the entrance to Santa Chiara, so this small area packs in a lot of history and architecture. It is a perfect stop if you enjoy stepping into churches and seeing how different they feel from one another.

5. Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace of Naples

Piazza del Plebiscito is Naples’ grandest square, a huge open space framed by elegant buildings and the domed Basilica di San Francesco di Paola on one side and the Royal Palace of Naples on the other. It is where big concerts and events are often held, but even on a quiet day it feels impressive. The Royal Palace itself gives you a glimpse into the lives of Neapolitan royalty, with opulent rooms, ornate ceilings and views over the square.

Wide plaza with people walking, a domed church, columns, and colorful buildings under a clear blue sky—this vibrant scene captures the essence of one of the popular neighborhoods in Naples.

6. Napoli Sotterranea & the Catacombs of San Gennaro

The temperature underground can be cool, so bring a light layer.

Napoli Sotterranea
Beneath the busy streets of Naples lies a network of ancient tunnels, aqueducts and chambers that date back to the Greeks and Romans. The Napoli Sotterranea tours take you down narrow staircases into this hidden world of rock‑cut passages and cisterns. It is a fascinating way to understand how layered the city is and to see how people used these spaces during wartime and over centuries.

Catacombs of San Gennaro
These Catacombs are early Christian burial sites carved into the rock, with layered arches, frescoes and a peaceful, respectful atmosphere. You walk through dimly lit corridors and chapels where you can see ancient artwork and tombs, along with clear explanations from guides. It feels less spooky than you might expect and more like a journey through the spiritual history of Naples.

7. Spanish quarters

The Spanish Quarters are a dense grid of narrow streets climbing up the hillside just above Via Toledo. This is everyday Naples: scooters darting past, balconies draped with laundry, tiny bars and street shrines, and locals chatting loudly from windows. It can feel a bit intense at first, but it is one of the most characterful parts of the city and a great place to see street art, grab a cheap meal and feel the pulse of local life.

8.Theatro di San Carlo

Teatro di San Carlo is the oldest continuously active opera house in the world and it looks exactly as grand as that sounds. Inside, you will find plush red seats, gilded balconies and an ornate ceiling, the kind of place that makes you sit up a little straighter. The acoustics are excellent, and even if you are not usually an opera fan, seeing a performance here feels like stepping into living history. Guided tours are also available if you just want to see the interior.

9. Murale Diego Armando Maradona

Busy street market decorated with flags, featuring a large mural of Diego Maradona on a building wall.

In the heart of the Spanish Quarters, you will find a huge mural of Diego Armando Maradona, the legendary footballer who is still a hero in Naples. The streets around the mural are filled with flags, photos and tributes, and there is usually a lively street market atmosphere. Even if you are not a football fan, it is a powerful glimpse into how much Maradona means to the city and a very photogenic corner of Naples.

10. Castel Nuovo

A large stone medieval castle with round towers under a clear blue sky, this landmark is one of the best attractions in Naples for visitors seeking history and stunning views.

Castel Nuovo, often called Maschio Angioino, is the big medieval fortress you will see near the port with its round towers and sturdy walls. It has been a royal residence, a defensive stronghold and a symbol of power, and today it houses a civic museum.

3. Where & what to Eat in Naples

Naples isn’t about fancy Michelin-star dining (though you’ll find that too). It’s about wood-fired ovens, fresh mozzarella, simple ingredients cooked to perfection. Many spots are family-run and have been serving the same recipes for generations. I’ve eaten my way through the city more times than I can count, and these are my top picks

1. Eat the best Pizza

Let’s start with the obvious: Naples invented pizza, and you’ll eat some of the best here. Traditional Neapolitan pizza has a soft, chewy crust with a slightly charred edge, topped simply with tomato, mozzarella, basil, and olive oil.

A close-up of a Margherita pizza with melted cheese, tomato sauce, and fresh basil leaves.

My Recommendations

  • L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, famous for its no-nonsense menu of just two pizzas: Marinara and Margherita. There’s often a queue, but it moves quickly.
  • For a quieter experience, try Starita in the Materdei neighbourhood
  • 50 Kalò in Piazza Sannazaro.

2. Grab some Street Food

Naples is street food heaven! Try Pizza fritta stuffed with ricotta, salami, and provolone cheese.
Or Cuoppo, a paper cone filled with fried seafood or vegetables, perfect for moments when you need to keep walking around.

3. Restaurants and Trattorias

Are you looking for a sit-down meal?
Try Tandem Ragù, which specializes in slow-cooked meat ragù served over pasta. It’s hearty, traditional, and popular with locals.
Trattoria Nennella, family-style experience with shared tables and home-style Neapolitan cooking. It’s chaotic, cash-only, and great fun if you’re up for the chaos.
For seafood, head to Zi Teresa serve fresh fish in a relaxed setting with sea views.

Not every restaurant in the historic center is good. Tourist traps do exist, especially near major sights. If a menu has pictures and multiple languages, it’s often a sign to keep walking. Look for places full of locals.

4. Coffee and Pastries

Neapolitans take their coffee seriously. Order an espresso (just say ‘un caffè’) at the bar and drink it standing up like a local. Try a caffè sospeso (suspended coffee), a Neapolitan tradition where you pay for two coffees but only drink one, leaving the second for someone in need. Like to read more about the Napolitan coffee culture?

Gran Caffè Gambrinus is super elegant, it has the best sweet pastries like Zeppole di San Giuseppe or Cannoli

5. Must try Local Specialties

Beyond pizza, Naples is known for so much more great food:

  • Pasta alla Genovese (a slow-cooked onion and beef sauce, despite the name)
  • Spaghetti alle vongole (with clams)
  • Parmigiana di melanzane (aubergine bake).
  • For some sweet, try Baba al rhum (a rum-soaked sponge cake) or Sfogliatelle

4. How to Get Around

Metro

Naples has two main metro lines.
Line 1 runs north–south through the city centre and includes some stunning contemporary art installations at stations like Toledo, Università, and Municipio.
Line 2 is more of a suburban rail line connecting the centre to outer neighbourhoods and Pozzuoli.

A subway train arrives at Municipio station with a few people waiting on the underground platform—a perfect local scene to discover in The Ultimate Naples City Guide (2026 Trip Planner).

Tickets cost €1.10 for a single journey and are valid for 90 minutes across metro, buses, trams, and funiculars. You can buy them at metro stations, tabacchi shops, or some newsstands. Remember to validate your ticket before boarding.

Buses

A green and white airport shuttle bus labeled "Alibus," part of Naples transportation, is parked at a sunny street stop.

Naples has a bus network, though routes can be confusing and services sometimes unreliable. The buses are often crowded, especially during rush hour.

I found the metro easier to navigate as a visitor, but buses are essential for reaching the Airport

Funiculars

A white funicular train at a covered station, with stairs and vintage lamps on either side—a charming way to explore the popular neighborhoods of Naples.

Funicular railways connect the lower city to the Vomero hill district. They’re covered by the same ticket as the metro and buses, and they’re a fun, efficient way to avoid steep climbs. The Centrale funicular from Piazza Fuga is the most useful for tourists heading to Castel Sant’Elmo or Certosa di San Martino.

Walking

Central Naples is surprisingly walk-able. The historic centre (Centro Storico) is best explored on foot, with its maze of narrow streets. Be prepared for uneven pavements and scooters zipping past. Wear comfortable shoes and stay alert, Neapolitan drivers are not known for their patience.

Taxis

Official taxis are metered, but always ensure the driver starts the meter or agree on a fixed fare beforehand. There are set fares for common routes like the airport or train station to the centre. Taxis can be tricky to hail on the street. Your best bet is to find a taxi rank near major piazzas or train stations, or ask your hotel to call one.

Car Rental or Bikes

I wouldn’t recommend renting a car unless you’re planning excursions outside the city. Biking in Naples’ chaotic traffic isn’t advisable either. Stick to public transport and walking for your safety and sanity.

5. Best Trips from Naples

Naples makes an excellent base for exploring the region. Three days in Naples is enough to see the highlights, but more days lets you explore the region and slow down.

  • Pompeii is just 40 minutes by train on the Circumvesuviana line.
  • Herculaneum is even closer and often less crowded. Both sites are extraordinary and deserve a full morning or afternoon.
  • Mount Vesuvius plan a hike to the crater.
  • Sorrento, a little over one hour by train
  • Amalfi Coast is accessible by bus or train
  • Capri, Ischia, or Procida islands: Ferries and hydrofoils depart from the city port.

Naples is not a polished, picture-perfect city, and that’s precisely its appeal. It’s raw, real, and full of life. You’ll eat incredible food, see world-class art and archaeology, and experience a side of Italy that feels authentically lived-in rather than packaged for tourists.
